What to ask?

ASK THE EXPERTS

What to ask?

You’re about to pick up the phone and call a school you’ve chosen from our list. Do you know what to ask? What things to look out for? Here’s a list to help you:

  1. What type of classes do you offer? You are choosing from a wide variety of classes, from intensive to afternoon workshops. Be sure you know what you want to get out of the experience before signing up for a program.
  2. What are the teachers like? Ask about the teaching methods as well. If you want to check out the area, go to museums and socialize with the French, you may not want to find yourself in a class-only option.
  3. What’s included in the price? Housing, meals and excursions are sometimes offered, so be sure to ask the school administration.
  4. How old are most of the students? Knowing the average age of students will give you an idea of how well the program will suit you. Activities and housing arrangements may differ depending on age too.
  5. What’s the level of other students? Whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned French speaker, it’s a good idea to find out the range of student abilities. Being advanced in a group of beginners will not only fail to challenge you, it might become simply boring.
  6. Where is the school located? If you’re a big-city person, you may not want to choose a program out in the countryside—or maybe that’s exactly what you’d like, but be sure you know what your surroundings will be like before you commit.
  7. How do I get there? Ask if you’ll be picked up at the airport or train station. If not, you may want to rethink carrying that heavy suitcase all the way to the school.

Bon voyage!
