Travel Study Program: Currently studying at Ceran Provence

Why I decide to study abroad: My father is Belgian and my maternal grandmother is French, so the majority of my family speaks French. Growing up, I always felt excluded from conversations when I went to Europe because of the language issue, so now I’m learning French.

How I prepared: I took a brief Introduction to French course during this summer, listened to tapes and read a book on Provence.

My experience at this program: The ratio of students to professors is small, so you get a lot of individual attention. I really appreciated the individual sessions in the afternoon to go over the material from the group morning classes. The professors get to know you both in and out of the classroom, as you spend meals, breaks and evenings with them. You also get to know the other students at mealtimes and by going to events together.

Surprises: Everyone was very encouraging, both the students and the professors. The learning experience was very much a group effort.

My tips for readers who want to study in France: Conversation plays a very important part in French life, and people are usually very helpful if they see that you are taking the initiative to learn their language. So be sure to know at least essential phrases before arriving here.

Favorite places: You’re literally living in history when in Europe. In Provence, it’s worth going to see the examples of Roman ruins, as they are some of the most complete in Europe.

Best memory: Standing on the Pont du Gard at sunset.
