Travel Study Program: Le Français Face à Face
Why I decided to study abroad: I’ve studied French for many years, and I’ve traveled to France many times but had never put the two together. I was looking for a unique angle to add to one of my trips and decided to take a language course.
My experience at this program: I chose Face à Face because it offered an individual experience, rather than a class format. It was a 100% immersion experience. The only time that wasn’t spent engaged in French was when I was alone. The day was structured with classroom time, fabulous meals—truly some of the best I have ever had—and a few outings.
My biggest challenges: Having patience with the exactitude of grammar. I’ve become sloppy and speak “acceptable” French…easily understood but not proper French. This course is excellent at stressing correct speech.
My biggest surprise: I thought I would come away with more automatic fluency than I did. I still have to think somewhat and mentally translate when I speak French.
My tips for readers who want to study in France: Allow for jet lag. Don’t expect yourself to be able to learn while tired and/or stressed. If you have studied French before, review what you already know.
What to expect from a study experience in France: Speaking, reading and listening to French individuals speak French is different than when non-native French speakers practice the language—regardless of their fluency. Rather than attempt to convert a French person’s translation and understanding into English, attempt to absorb the unique French aspect. It is in many cases what makes the language so beautiful.
My best memory: Walking up and down streets everywhere, with no particular destination. Just discovering what was there.
